Description

The RDS series outdoor disconnector is rated for 252 kV and is designed for three-phase AC transmission systems with nominal voltages of 220 kV, 230 kV, 245 kV, and 252 kV. It provides visible isolation for equipment maintenance and performs no-load line switching and bus-transfer current switching.

The disconnector uses a two-column horizontal center-break structure. The conductive blade is driven by the rotating insulator post and opens at the center, forming a clear visible isolating gap. The main circuit resistance is minimized through silver-plated contacts and an optimized current path.

The disconnector is operated by a motor mechanism with three-pole linkage. The earthing switch is installed on one or both sides as required and is manually operated with three-pole synchronization.

Key Features

  • Single-voltage optimized design:Engineered specifically for the 252 kV class, with insulation coordination and mechanical ratings sized precisely for 220 kV through 252 kV nominal networks, eliminating over-engineering found in multi-voltage platform designs
  • Global voltage compatibility:One product design covers multiple nominal system voltages including 220 kV (Europe, Asia, South America), 230 kV (North America), 245 kV (IEC standard), and 252 kV (China, Middle East), reducing qualification and inventory complexity for EPC contractors and utilities operating across multiple regions
  • Center-break mechanism with reduced operating torque:Rotating insulator drive system with sealed bearings and self-lubricating joints minimizes the operating force required, allowing a compact motor mechanism and reducing mechanical stress on the supporting structure
  • Silver-plated multi-point contact system:Main contacts are silver-plated with multiple parallel current paths, keeping contact resistance stable below 120 µΩ throughout the 10,000-operation mechanical life without intermediate maintenance
  • Flexible earthing switch arrangement :The earthing switch can be installed on the left, right, or both sides of each phase, with independent manual operation per phase or synchronized three-pole linkage via connecting rods, adapting to different substation earthing schemes
  • Compact phase spacing:Optimized phase-to-phase distance reduces switchyard width for 252 kV substations, making it suitable for brownfield expansions where existing bay spacing is constrained

Frequently asked questions

Basic Electrical Parameters

  • Rated Voltage: All four models from Siemens, Hitachi Energy, GE, and Pinggao are rated for 550 kV.

  • Rated Current: The Siemens, Hitachi, and Pinggao models are rated for 4000A. The GE PKG Gen3-550 offers a higher rated current of 5000A, making it suitable for applications with higher power flow requirements.

  • Short-Circuit Withstand: All models demonstrate identical performance, with a short-time withstand current of 63 kA for 3 seconds.

  • Peak Withstand Current: All models share the same peak withstand current rating of 171 kA.

330kV is used in some regions of China, 345kV is common in North American power grids, and 400kV is mostly customized for cross-border projects or special industrial scenarios. They have not been incorporated into the global unified universal standard system.
