Types of AC Motor Windings

The classification of AC motor windings can be carried out from multiple perspectives, mainly including the number of phases, the number of layers inside the slot, the number of slots occupied by each pole per phase, winding arrangement, phase belt, coil shape, and end connection method. Classification by the number of phases

  • Single-phase winding: Suitable for specific applications such as small motors in household appliances.

  • Three-phase winding: The most common type, widely used in various motors for industrial and household applications.

Classified by the number of layers in the slot

  • Single Layer Winding: Only one coil side in each slot.

  • Double layer winding: Two coil sides are placed in each slot, usually divided into upper and lower layers.

Classified by the number of slots occupied by each pole per phase

  • Integral-slot winding: The number of slots occupied per pole and phase is an integer.

  • Fractional-pitch winding: The number of slots occupied per pole and phase is a non-integer.

Classified by winding arrangement

  • Concentrated winding: The winding is concentrated in a few slots.

  • Distributed winding: The winding is distributed across multiple slots to reduce the effects of harmonics.
