What is Creeping in Energy Meter?

Definition

Creeping in an energy meter is a phenomenon where the aluminium disc rotates continuously when only voltage is applied to the pressure coil and no current flows through the current coil. In essence, it is an error causing the energy meter to consume a minute amount of energy even when no load is connected to the meter.

Impact and Causes of Creeping

Creeping can increase the disc's rotation speed even under light - load conditions, leading to inflated meter readings. Factors such as vibration, stray magnetic fields, and excessive voltage across the potential coil contribute to this phenomenon. The root cause of creeping error often lies in excessive friction. At no - load, the main driving torque is absent, so the disc rotates due to the additional torque from the compensating vane.

Prevention of Creeping

Creeping can be prevented by drilling two holes diametrically opposite each other in the disc. When a small edge of the disc passes under the pole of the magnet, the holes cause the aluminium disc to stop rotating. This effectively limits the disc's revolution. A better understanding of this action can be gained by referring to the figure below.

When a hole in the disc comes under the pole of the magnet, the circular path of the eddy currents in the disc is disrupted. Let (A') denote the center point of the magnetic pole generated by the current. The force exerted on the disc causes the center point (A') to shift away from the axis A of the magnetic pole.At no - load, the disc rotates until the holes align with the edges of the magnet. In this situation, the disc's movement is counteracted by the torque produced. In certain instances, a small piece of iron is affixed to the edge of the disc. An attractive force then arises between the pole magnets and the iron piece, effectively preventing the disc from creeping.

Low-Voltage Distribution Lines and Power Distribution Requirements for Construction Sites
Low-voltage distribution lines refer to the circuits that, through a distribution transformer, step down the high voltage of 10 kV to the 380/220 V level—i.e., the low-voltage lines running from the substation to the end-use equipment.Low-voltage distribution lines should be considered during the design phase of substation wiring configurations. In factories, for workshops with relatively high power demand, dedicated workshop substations are often installed, where transformers supply power direc

1. What Is a Three-Phase Power Surge Protective Device (SPD)?A three-phase power surge protective device (SPD), also known as a three-phase lightning arrester, is specifically designed for three-phase AC power systems. Its primary function is to limit transient overvoltages caused by lightning strikes or switching operations in the power grid, thereby protecting downstream electrical equipment from damage. The SPD operates based on energy absorption and dissipation: when an overvoltage event occ

Railway 10kV Power Through Lines: Design & Operation Requirements
The Daquan Line has a large power load, with numerous and scattered load points along the section. Each load point has a small capacity, with an average of one load point every 2-3 km, so two 10 kV power through lines should be adopted for power supply. High-speed railways use two lines for power supply: primary through line and comprehensive through line. The power sources of the two through lines are taken from the dedicated bus sections fed by the voltage regulators installed in each power di

Analysis of Causes of Power Line Loss and Loss Reduction Methods
In power grid construction, we should focus on actual conditions and establish a grid layout suitable for our own needs. We need to minimize power loss in the grid, save social resource investment, and comprehensively improve China's economic benefits. Relevant power supply and electricity departments should also set work goals centered on effectively reducing power loss, respond to energy conservation calls, and build green social and economic benefits for China.1.Current Status of China's Powe
