However, they cannot be used to open and close normal load currents or short-circuit currents because they lack arc-quenching devices (or have very weak arc-quenching capabilities). Attempting to open or close large currents can result in intense arcs, damaging the isolator switch and potentially causing electrical fires or other accidents.
