The Golden Duo in Distribution Protection: Recloser and Sectionalizer Core Analysis

The Golden Duo in Distribution Protection: Recloser and Sectionalizer Core Analysis

In medium-voltage distribution networks, and on overhead lines in particular, supply reliability is a core performance indicator. To cope with transient faults such as lightning-induced flashover and tree contact, as well as permanent faults caused by equipment ageing, engineers introduced automated switching devices. Among them, the recloser and the sectionalizer are the two most fundamental and most important devices, and their coordination forms the classic local-mode Feeder Automation (FA) s

How Does a Recloser Controller Achieve Distribution Network Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration?

How Does a Recloser Controller Achieve Distribution Network Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration?

The core objective of distribution network fault handling is to isolate faults and restore power supply in the shortest possible time. As the core intelligent unit of distribution automation, the recloser controller works in coordination with sectionalizers, other reclosers, or the master station system to achieve a fully automated closed loop from "fault detection → nature determination → precise isolation → service restoration." This article provides a systematic analysis of its core role and

SF6 Outdoor Ring Main Unit: Maintenance-Free Myth & Daily Inspection Guide

SF6 Outdoor Ring Main Unit: Maintenance-Free Myth & Daily Inspection Guide

I. Is the SF6 Outdoor Ring Main Unit a "Maintenance-Free" Device?SF6 outdoor ring main units are often marketed in the industry as "maintenance-free" equipment, but this concept requires precise understanding. What "Maintenance-Free" Actually CoversThe core components of an SF6 ring main unit — load switches, busbars, fuses, and other primary live parts — are fully sealed within a stainless steel gas tank filled with SF6 gas as the insulation and arc-quenching medium. This fully enclosed, hermeti

DC Charging Station Reactive Power Compensation: Why, When, and How to Configure Precisely

DC Charging Station Reactive Power Compensation: Why, When, and How to Configure Precisely

I. Reactive Power Characteristics of DC Charging PilesDC charging piles are rectifier-type power electronic devices whose reactive power characteristics differ fundamentally from traditional motor-type inductive loads:During Loaded Charging: The pile's internal Power Factor Correction (PFC) circuit ensures that whenever a vehicle is charging normally, the power factor typically remains stable at ≥0.95 — fully meeting grid assessment standards. At this stage, virtually no additional compensation

Solid-State Circuit Breakers: No Arc, Yet Still Limited Lifespan?

Solid-State Circuit Breakers: No Arc, Yet Still Limited Lifespan?

1. What Is a Solid-State Circuit Breaker?Traditional circuit breakers rely on mechanical contacts to make and break current. When interrupting large currents, a high-temperature arc forms, repeatedly eroding the contacts until the breaker reaches end of life.A Solid-State Circuit Breaker (SSCB) replaces mechanical contacts with power semiconductor devices — such as IGBTs or SiC MOSFETs — acting as "electronic switches" controlled by gate voltage. With no physical contact separation, arcing is f

Medium-Voltage Solid-State Transformer (SST) Global Market Report – Full Primary Voltage Coverage

1. Background and ScopeThis report provides a systematic review of primary-side (grid-side) voltage requirements for Solid-State Transformers (SSTs)—also referred to as Power Electronic Transformers (PETs)—in global markets outside of China.Core Definitions:Primary / Grid-Side Voltage: The medium-voltage distribution level to which the SST is connected. This is the fundamental basis for insulation design, number of series-connected power modules, arrester selection, EMC compliance, and grid-conn
