Sensitive Earth Fault (SEF) Protection Logic — The Physical Safety Lock for Smart Grids

100mA SEF protection secures grids against high-impedance faults. Because it stops 0.1A leaks missed by standard relays, so it prevents wildfires in 0.5s.

Sensitive Earth Fault (SEF) Protection Logic — The Physical Safety Lock for Smart Grids
1. Industry Challenge: The "Physical Blind Spot" of Traditional Protection

In conventional distribution network protection, 50/51 (Phase/Ground Overcurrent) functions rely on large RMS current magnitudes to trigger a trip. However, when a conductor falls on dry earth, sand, or concrete, the contact resistance is extremely high, resulting in fault currents typically ranging from only 2A to 10A.

  • Physical Hazard: This current level is far below standard ground protection pickup settings (typically ≥40A), causing the switch to "fail-to-trip."
  • Catastrophic Consequences: Persistent electric arcs can rapidly ignite surrounding vegetation (wildfire risk) or pose lethal shock hazards to anyone nearby.

2. Core Technology: Pixel-Level Sampling & The SEF Logic Engine

Our intelligent recloser controller (aligned with RW-energy’s core architecture) physically severs this failure path through the Pixel-Level SEF Algorithm.

2.1 High-Precision Zero-Sequence Sampling (100mA Sensitivity)

Unlike standard CTs, our system utilizes high-permeability zero-sequence transformers combined with 2MHz high-frequency sampling to filter out background noise.

  • Physical Performance: The controller reliably identifies zero-sequence current anomalies as low as 100mA.

2.2 Waveform Signature Analysis (Transient Recognition)

SEF logic looks beyond current magnitude; it analyzes "Arc Signatures."

  • Technical Solution: The controller features a built-in arc fingerprint library. By identifying the unique "harmonic distortion" and "random pulse stochasticity" of high-impedance faults, it physically distinguishes between "system unbalance" and "real grounding faults."

3. Engineering Advantage: The Last Line of Defense for Fire & Personal Safety

3.1 Physical Loop for Wildfire Interception

In dry seasons, a 5A persistent arc can ignite parched grass within 1.5s. The SEF logic intervenes early via an I2.5tI2.5t thermal energy model, executing a physical disconnect before the spark evolves into a full-scale fire.

3.2 Improving Reliability Metrics (SAIDI/SAIFI)

Through precise coordination with upstream substation protection, SEF enables selective isolation of localized branch faults, preventing wide-scale substation busbar trips caused by a single high-resistance grounding event.
