SF6 replacement switchgear
Looking for an SF6 alternative RMU? ROCKWILL designs and manufactures zero-GWP ring main units insulated by pure air, dry air or solid dielectric instead of SF6 — the same 12–24kV protection, with no greenhouse gas and full IEC 62271 certification.

A ring main unit that protects and switches secondary distribution feeders without using sulfur hexafluoride. If you are specifying a non-SF6 ring main unit, you are choosing an SF6 alternative RMU.
For decades, RMUs have used SF6 gas for insulation and arc quenching. As F-gas regulations tighten, utilities and industrial end-users need a credible SF6 alternative RMU that holds the same ratings. ROCKWILL answers with three SF6-free insulation technologies — pure air, dry air and solid insulation — all paired with sealed vacuum interrupters for current breaking. Whether you need a pure air insulated RMU, a dry-air unit or a compact solid-insulated model, you get zero global-warming potential and the same IEC 62271 class performance.
The greenest route: conditioned dry air sealed in the tank, paired with vacuum interruption. Our flagship pure air insulated RMU.
Compressed dry air insulation for robust secondary networks — see our work as a dry air RMU manufacturer.
Epoxy-encapsulated live parts for the smallest footprint in polluted or humid environments.

The case for moving off SF6 now — before the next retrofit deadline — is environmental, regulatory and economic.
SF6 has a global warming potential around 23,500 times that of CO2. A zero GWP RMU contains no such gas, so over the asset life there is effectively nothing to leak, report or recover. The same logic applies to the panels around it: a zero GWP switchgear fleet and eco-friendly medium voltage switchgear let you meet F-gas phase-down rules and net-zero tenders today, rather than retrofitting later. For urban networks, the 24kV SF6 free RMU class is the most common direct replacement for existing ring substations.
No fluorinated gas means no phase-out exposure, no gas reporting and no recovery obligation at end of life.
12–24kV, 630A busbar, 20kA/3s typical — the SF6 alternative RMU matches conventional SF6 gear.
No gas-density top-ups, no gas recovery, just sealed vacuum parts and air-pressure monitoring.
Buyers often ask how pure-air and dry-air designs really compare to SF6. In short: the interruption is vacuum in all cases, and the insulation is where the SF6-free difference lives.
Our technical guides cover the detail: read pure air vs SF6 switchgear for the dielectric and environmental comparison, dry air vs SF6 switchgear for the engineering and retrofit view, and pure air switchgear vs SF6 switchgear for a panel-to-panel look at ratings and footprint. Across all three, the conclusion is the same — for 12–24kV distribution, air/solid insulation plus vacuum interruption is a proven, direct SF6 replacement. Where you are replacing whole panels rather than just the RMU, our dry air switchgear manufacturer line and our SF6 replacement switchgear range give you the metal-enclosed, SF6-free counterpart.
| SF6 alternative RMU (air/solid) | Conventional SF6 RMU | |
|---|---|---|
| Global warming potential | Zero | SF6 ≈ 23,500 × CO2 |
| Interruption | Sealed vacuum | SF6 / vacuum hybrid |
| Maintenance | Pressure monitor, sealed vacuum | Gas-density checks & top-ups |
| End of life | Standard recycling | Gas recovery & disposal |
We are the factory, not a trading company. As an experienced SF6-free RMU manufacturer, we own design, fabrication, vacuum-interrupter assembly, type testing and export packing under one roof.
Distributors, EPC contractors and switchgear brands work with us under OEM/ODM: your nameplate, your manuals, your packaging, engineered from your single-line diagram. Alongside our RMUs we supply dry air switchgear for industrial incomers and feeder schemes — so you can source the whole SF6-free secondary network from one certified partner.
For most 12–24kV secondary networks, a pure-air or dry-air insulated RMU with vacuum interruption is the best direct alternative — zero GWP, same IEC 62271 ratings. Choose solid insulation where footprint is critical.
Yes. Vacuum interrupters handle current breaking while air/solid insulation handles steady-state voltage; units are type-tested to the same IEC 62271 class.
The 24kV SF6 free RMU class is designed to match conventional footprints and cable arrangements, making it a practical end-of-life replacement.
Yes. We are an SF6-free RMU manufacturer offering full OEM/ODM with your nameplate and documentation.
