An air insulated ring main unit (AIS RMU) uses ambient air as the main insulation inside a sealed or ventilated enclosure, combining load break switches, busbar and earthing functions for MV ring networks without SF6 gas.
Primary RMUs are used at higher load and higher fault levels in main distribution; secondary RMUs serve lower-load laterals and customer connections with lower rated current and short-circuit rating.
