I. Core Logic: From Topology to Protection Scheme

RMU selection is not a simple stacking of parameters; its essence is determining the protection scheme based on the grid topology. Common selection logic can be categorized as follows:

  1. Load Protection Scheme (Load Break Switch + Fuse Combination):
  2. Application: Primarily used for protecting distribution transformers (usually 1250kVA and below).
  3. Technical Advantage: Fuses possess extremely high current-limiting capabilities for short circuits, with fast clearing times and low costs. It is the most economical and efficient protection method for distribution terminals.
  4. Line Protection Scheme (Vacuum Circuit Breaker):
  5. Application: Used for incoming/outgoing lines, protection of large-capacity transformers (>1250kVA), or automated lines requiring frequent operations.
  6. Technical Advantage: Integrated with Microcomputer Protection Units (RTU/FTU), it enables automatic reclosing, fault location, and isolation. For areas pursuing "zero flicker" power supply, the circuit breaker solution is the only choice.

II. Insulation Media: Balancing Performance and Sustainability

Currently, mainstream RMUs on the market are classified into three types based on their insulation media, each with its own technical advantages:

  • SF6 Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS): Utilizes the excellent arc-extinguishing and insulation properties of SF6. Its advantage is an extremely compact structure, and the fully enclosed design is unaffected by external dust and humidity. However, under environmental pressure, the market is gradually shifting toward low-fluorine or fluorine-free alternatives.
  • Solid Insulated Switchgear (SIS): Employs high-performance solid insulation materials (such as epoxy resin) to fully encapsulate the live parts. ROCKWILL RMUs utilize advanced APG (Automatic Pressure Gelation) technology, completely eliminating the risk of SF6 leakage and providing excellent electric field distribution. This is currently the preferred choice for green distribution.
  • Air Insulated Switchgear: Features mature technology and intuitive maintenance, but has a larger footprint and is significantly affected by humidity and salt spray. It is mostly used in indoor, dry environments with fewer space constraints.

III. Expert Insight: The "Hidden Parameters" of Success

Beyond basic parameters (rated voltage, rated current, short-circuit breaking capacity), true expert selection focuses on these critical indicators:

  1. Protection Class & Corrosion Resistance: For outdoor environments or coastal areas with high salt spray, an IP67 rating and C5-level anti-corrosion coating are mandatory.
  2. Reliability of Five-Proof Interlocks: Operational error is the primary cause of electrical accidents. Selection must verify the mandatory and logical rigor of mechanical interlocks.
  3. Smart Grid Expansion Interfaces: In the modern smart grid framework, RMUs must have good secondary interface compatibility, reserving space for Current Transformers (CT), Voltage Transformers (PT) for power harvesting, and communication modules.

To help you make more intuitive selection decisions, I have constructed the following RMU Technical Selection Matrix:

IV. Summary: Not Just an Enclosure, But a System Fuse

RMU selection should follow the principles of "Reliability First, Maintenance Ease as the Foundation, and Environmental Friendliness as a Priority." For projects pursuing high reliability and sustainability, I recommend switchgear featuring KEMA certification, vacuum arc-extinguishing, and solid insulation (such as the ROCKWILL RZN series).

In future distribution grids, the RMU will no longer be just a switching node, but an intelligent sensing terminal integrating sensing, communication, and protection. Choosing the right equipment is like choosing a long-term insurance policy for the "heart" of your grid.
