What Is Testing Of Electrical Power Cable

  1. The following tests are the type test of electrical power cable.

Physical tests for insulation and sheath

    1. Tensile strength and elongation at break

    2. Aging in an air oven

    3. Aging in air bomb

    4. Aging in an oxygen bomb

    5. Hot set

    6. Oil resistance

    7. Tear resistance

    8. Insulation resistance

    9. High voltage (water immersion) test

    10. Flammability test (only for SE-3, SE-4)

    11. Water abortion test (for insulation)

    12. Persulphate test (for copper )

    13. Annealing test (for copper)

    14. Tensile test (for Aluminium)

    15. Wrapping test (for Aluminium)

    16. Conductor resistance test (for all)

    17. Test for thickness of insulation (for all)

    18. Measurement of overall diameter (where specified)(for all)

  2. Acceptance test: The following shall constitute acceptance test:

    1. Annealing test (for copper)

    2. Tensile test (for Aluminium )

    3. Wrapping test (for Aluminium )

    4. Conductor resistance test

    5. Test for the thickness of insulation and sheath and overall diameter

    6. Tensile strength and elongation at break of insulation and heath

    7. Hot set test for insulation and sheath

    8. High voltage test

    9. Insulation resistance test

  3. Routine test: The following shall constitute the routine test.

    1. Conductor resistance test

    2. High voltage test

    3. Insulation resistance test

High Voltage Test (Water Immersion Test) :
Approximate 3 meters long core is removed as a sample from the finished cable or cord. The sample then is so immersed in a water bath at room temperature that its ends protrude at least 200 mm above the water level. After 24 hours, an alternating voltage of the required level is applied between
conductor and water. This voltage is raised as per requirement within 10 sec and hold constant at this value for 5 min. If the sample fails in this test, one more sample can be subjected to this test.

Test on completed cables (Acceptance and routine test) :
This test shall be carried out between conductors or between conductor and screen/armor. The test shall be carried out on required voltage the test shall be carried out at room temperature and the time of application shall be 5 min no failure of Insulation shall occur.

Flammability Test :
Period of burning after removal of the flame shall not exceed 60 sec and the unaffected portion from the lower edge of the top clamp shall be at least 50 mm.

PT Fuse Slow Blow: Causes, Detection & Prevention
I. Fuse Structure and Root Cause AnalysisSlow Fuse Blowing:From the design principle of fuses, when a large fault current passes through the fuse element, due to the metal effect (certain refractory metals become fusible under specific alloy conditions), the fuse first melts at the soldered tin ball. The arc then rapidly vaporizes the entire fuse element. The resulting arc is quickly extinguished by quartz sand. However, due to harsh operating environments, the fuse element may age under the comb

Why Fuses Blow: Overload, Short Circuit & Surge Causes
Common Causes of Fuse BlowingCommon reasons for fuse blowing include voltage fluctuations, short circuits, lightning strikes during storms, and current overloads. These conditions can easily cause the fuse element to melt.A fuse is an electrical device that interrupts the circuit by melting its fusible element due to heat generated when current exceeds a specified value. It operates on the principle that, after an overcurrent persists for a certain period, the heat produced by the current melts

Fuse Maintenance & Replacement: Safety and Best Practices
Fuse Maintenance & Replacement: Safety and Best Practices
1. Fuse MaintenanceFuses in service should be regularly inspected. The inspection includes the following items: Load current should be compatible with the rated current of the fuse element. For fuses equipped with a fuse blown indicator, check whether the indicator has actuated. Check the conductors, connection points, and the fuse itself for overheating; ensure connections are tight and making good contact. Inspect the fuse exterior for cracks, contamination, or signs of arcing/discharge. Liste
