Thunderstorm generator definition

A thunderstorm generator is a device used to simulate lightning phenomena under thunderstorm weather conditions.

Working principle

A thunderstorm generator usually simulates the lightning discharge process by producing a high-voltage pulse. It can use the capacitor to discharge instantaneously after charging, or through other high-voltage discharge technology, to generate a strong electric field and current, so as to simulate the arc discharge and electromagnetic pulse of lightning.

Major component

  • High voltage power supply: provides the high voltage required to produce lightning simulation. This is usually a power supply system capable of outputting thousands of volts or more.

  • Discharge electrode: A component used to generate an arc discharge. It usually consists of two or more electrodes, and the distance and shape between them can be adjusted to control the characteristics of the discharge.

  • Control system: Used to control the operation of the thunderstorm generator, including the setting and adjustment of charging voltage, discharge interval, discharge times and other parameters.

  • Safety device: In order to ensure the safety of the operator and equipment, the thunderstorm generator is usually equipped with a variety of safety devices, such as overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection, grounding protection, etc.

Application field

  •    Meteorological research: used to study the formation, development and evolution of thunderstorms, and the impact of lightning on the atmospheric environment. By simulating different intensities and types of lightning, the physical characteristics and meteorological effects of thunderstorms can be better understood.

  • Power system testing: Lightning shock testing is performed on power equipment and systems to assess their reliability and anti-interference ability under thunderstorm weather conditions.

  • Electronic equipment test: used to test the anti-interference ability of electronic equipment and communication system to lightning electromagnetic pulse. The intense electromagnetic pulse generated by lightning can cause serious interference and damage to electronic equipment and communication systems, so relevant testing and protective design are required.

  •   Aerospace field: lightning protection testing of aircraft, satellites and other aerospace equipment. During flight, aerospace equipment can be subjected to lightning strikes, so rigorous lightning protection testing is required to ensure its safe operation.

Matters needing attention

  •   Safe operation: Because the high voltage and strong current generated by the thunderstorm generator have certain dangers, the safe operation procedures must be strictly observed during operation to ensure the safety of operators and equipment.

  • Environmental requirements: Thunderstorm generators usually need to be used under specific environmental conditions, such as dry, well-ventilated places. At the same time, it is also necessary to avoid use near flammable and explosive items to prevent accidents.

  • Calibration and maintenance: In order to ensure the performance and accuracy of the thunderstorm generator, regular calibration and maintenance are required. This includes checking the working status of high-voltage power supply, discharge electrode, control system and other components, as well as replacing damaged parts and cleaning and maintenance.

Grounding Causes of Cable Lines and the Principles of Incident Handling
Our 220 kV substation is located far from the urban center in a remote area, surrounded primarily by industrial zones such as Lanshan, Hebin, and Tasha Industrial Parks. Major high-load consumers in these zones—including silicon carbide, ferroalloy, and calcium carbide plants—account for approximately 83.87% of our bureau’s total load. The substation operates at voltage levels of 220 kV, 110 kV, and 35 kV.The 35 kV low-voltage side mainly supplies feeders to ferroalloy and silicon carbide plants
