Analysis of Measurement Errors in Electrical Instruments and Elimination Strategies

1.Electrical Instruments and Common Testing Methods
Electrical instruments play a vital role in the generation, transmission, and utilization of electricity. As a special form of energy, electricity requires strict safety standards in production and use. Safe electricity usage is crucial to daily life, production, and socio-economic development. Power system monitoring relies on electrical instruments, which are often affected by various factors during measurement, leading to errors. These errors can impact power assessments, disrupt equipment operation, and reduce the safety and reliability of power distribution systems. Therefore, eliminating measurement errors is essential.

When using electrical instruments to test power equipment and circuits, proper selection and usage are critical. The most commonly used instruments fall into three categories: (1) circuit parameter testers, (2) electromagnetic detectors, and (3) electrical quantity meters.

Three common measurement methods are also used:

  • Direct Measurement: The most widely used method, known for its simplicity and speed, but prone to errors. It involves using standard instruments to obtain direct readings from equipment for maintenance. However, due to the lack of in-depth equipment analysis, results may be inaccurate.

  • Indirect Measurement: This method uses mathematical functions to derive data. While still not highly accurate, it is suitable for applications with lower precision requirements.

  • Comparative Measurement: Less commonly used in general applications, this method is reserved for high-precision equipment monitoring. Though more costly and complex, it yields the most accurate results with minimal error.

2. Measurement Errors and Their Causes
Errors frequently occur during electrical instrument testing, primarily due to four factors:

2.1 Systematic Errors
Systematic errors often appear during testing of equipment and transmission lines, characterized by consistent deviation in magnitude or direction. When multiple measurements are taken, inconsistent results may arise—this is systematic error. These errors often stem from inherent inaccuracies in the instrument before measurement even begins.

2.2 Operator Errors
Operators play a crucial role in testing. Inaccurate results caused by human mistakes are known as operator errors. Variations in personnel—such as skill level, patience, technical proficiency, and experience—greatly affect outcomes. Skilled and experienced operators typically achieve accurate results with minimal error, while less experienced or careless operators may fail to properly handle instruments, leading to significant measurement errors.

2.3 Instrument Errors
Instrument error is the root cause of many measurement inaccuracies. It arises from the instrument itself, primarily due to insufficient precision. Low-precision instruments produce consistent errors in every measurement. Two main reasons contribute to this:

  • Poor quality control by manufacturers. Many manufacturers prioritize profit and volume over quality, releasing inaccurate instruments to the market.

  • Complex measurement environments. Equipment and lines operate in varied terrain and weather conditions, which can affect instrument performance and introduce errors. Operators must select appropriate instruments and methods based on environmental conditions to ensure accuracy.

2.4 Methodological Errors
The choice of measurement method is crucial. Using an inappropriate method leads to methodological errors. Inaccurate method selection can compound errors across multiple measurements, negatively impacting the entire process.

3.Strategies for Eliminating Measurement Errors

3.1 Eliminating Systematic Errors
Systematic errors are unavoidable but predictable. Instead of merely increasing measurement repetitions, operators should analyze data patterns and apply appropriate correction methods to identify and eliminate these errors.

3.2 Reducing Operator Errors
This area offers significant improvement potential. Key steps include: enhancing technician training to ensure technical competence; encouraging less experienced staff to learn from seasoned operators; and promoting continuous self-evaluation and skill development to improve performance and accuracy.

3.3 Minimizing Instrument Errors
Two primary strategies: (1) purchasing high-precision instruments to ensure quality, and (2) conducting thorough site assessments to select the most suitable instrument for the task.

3.4 Addressing Methodological Errors
The only solution is optimizing the measurement method. Selection should be based on specific conditions, equipment, and environment. Technicians should collaborate and discuss options to ensure the chosen method is effective and correct.

4. Conclusion
Electricity is one of humanity’s greatest inventions and a fundamental part of modern life. With growing emphasis on electrical safety, strengthening power system testing is vital. Accurate electrical instrument measurement and error elimination create a safe, stable operating environment, ensuring user safety. Therefore, analyzing measurement errors and developing effective elimination strategies are of great significance for electrical safety.

A Guide to the Latest Transformer Testing Technologies
Transformers come in many types, primarily oil-immersed and dry-type. Their fault manifestations are diverse, but most failures are concentrated in the windings, core, connecting components, and oil contamination. For example, winding insulation damage, open circuits, short circuits, and inter-turn short circuits at connection points. Common external symptoms of transformer faults include severe overheating, excessive temperature rise, abnormal noise, and three-phase imbalance.Routine transforme

Inspection of transformers can be performed without any detection tools.
Transformers are electrical devices that change voltage and current based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. In power transmission and distribution systems, transformers are essential for stepping up or stepping down voltages to reduce energy losses during transmission. For example, industrial facilities typically receive power at 10 kV, which is then stepped down to low voltage via transformers for on-site use. Today, let’s learn about several common transformer inspection methods.1
