Document description

Compliant with IEC 60870-5-7:2025 of distribution equipment integrates A/T security profiles, RBAC, AEAD encryption & MAC authentication, adapts to 101/104 protocols, ensuring secure data transmission for reliable grid operation.

IEC TS 60870-5-7:2025 is a technical specification under the IEC 60870-5 telecontrol protocol series, defining security extension mechanisms for IEC 60870-5-101 and IEC 60870-5-104 telecontrol protocols by adopting IEC 62351 security framework. It specifies secure message structures, authentication algorithms and data integrity verification methods for power system remote communication. This standard enables receiving devices to verify the identity of message senders and confirm that protocol data units remain unaltered during transmission, defending against tampering and unauthorized access in distribution automation communication. Relevant certification documents include Protocol Conformance Test Certificate No. PTC-2025-05213, Witness Security Test Report No. WST-2025-10047, Routine Validation Report No. RV-2025 series, all issued by CNAS accredited independent test laboratory and available for tender submission, utility review and project site acceptance. It is widely adopted for securing communication between protection relays, recloser controllers and SCADA master stations in medium and high voltage power grids.

Frequently asked questions

IEC TS 60870-5-7 defines security extensions for IEC 60870-5-101 and IEC 60870-5-104 telecontrol protocols. It implements authentication and data integrity checks to verify authorized senders and detect message tampering during communication in power telecontrol systems.
IEC TS 60870-5-7 applies the IEC 62351 power system cybersecurity framework, and works as an add-on security layer for IEC 60870-5-101 (serial telecontrol) and IEC 60870-5-104 (IP-based telecontrol).
This standard supports message origin authentication, data integrity verification, anti-replay protection and optional user identity authentication. It ensures that remote control commands and measured data cannot be modified or forged over the communication channel.
Intelligent protection relays, auto recloser controllers, RTUs, feeder terminal units and substation gateways can implement IEC TS 60870-5-7, to secure the telecontrol data exchanged with SCADA and distribution automation master stations.
Compliance requires Protocol Conformance Test Certificate, Witness Security Test Report and factory validation reports issued by CNAS accredited laboratories. These documents are submitted for utility tender evaluation and site acceptance.
The latest official version is IEC TS 60870-5-7:2025, which replaces the 2013 edition and updates cryptographic algorithms and security profiles to meet modern power grid cybersecurity requirements.
