The Rockwill electric brake switch is designed for rapid electrical braking and shutdown of large hydro-turbine generating units. It connects the generator to a braking resistor to dissipate kinetic energy during the deceleration phase, providing a controlled and wear-free braking method compared to mechanical braking systems.
The equipment consists of three single poles, each in an individual enclosed metal enclosure mounted on a common chassis. The brake switch uses SF6 as the insulation and arc-extinguishing medium, with arcing contacts made of ablation-resistant copper-tungsten material for high electrical endurance. An earthing switch is integrated and uses air insulation with a motor operating mechanism.
The brake switch is equipped with a hydraulic spring operating mechanism, and all three poles are driven via a three-phase mechanical linkage. A pressure relief device is fitted at the top; if the internal gas pressure exceeds 1.2 MPa due to an abnormal event, the gas is safely released.
