As a major economy in North Africa, Egypt’s power system is facing growing pressure from rapid urbanization and industrialization. In core cities such as Cairo and Alexandria, as well as in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, the distribution network relies heavily on cable systems with high capacitive earth fault currents. Many areas are also located near desert environments, where operating conditions are harsh.
1. Challenge Analysis
Technical challenges
High wind-blown sand, large day-night temperature variations, and dust accumulation can reduce external insulation performance. High ambient temperatures increase oil temperature and accelerate insulation aging. Single-phase earth faults occur frequently, requiring fast arc suppression or fault current limitation to maintain supply continuity.
Economic challenges
Customers are sensitive to lifecycle costs. Unplanned outages can cause significant industrial losses, so supply reliability is critical. Maintenance labor and transportation costs are relatively high, making low-maintenance or maintenance-free equipment more attractive.
2. Core Technical Solution
This solution adopts a zigzag-connected earthing transformer combined with a neutral earthing resistor or arc suppression coil, with design adaptations for local Egyptian operating conditions.
Protection against harsh environments
- Fully sealed corrugated oil tank: The transformer uses a fully sealed corrugated tank without a conventional conservator. Oil volume changes are accommodated by the elastic deformation of the corrugated plates.
Benefit: External air, moisture, and dust are effectively isolated from the oil, reducing the risk of oil oxidation and insulation degradation in dry and dusty environments.
- Enhanced cooling design: Additional radiator surface area and optimized oil flow paths are provided for high-temperature operation. Top oil temperature rise and winding temperature rise comply with IEC 60076-2 under full-load and high-ambient-temperature conditions.
Improved network reliability
- Low and stable zero-sequence impedance: The zigzag connection provides low and stable zero-sequence impedance, enabling effective coordination with neutral earthing resistors or arc suppression coils. This supports earth fault current compensation and relay protection requirements.
- High dynamic and thermal stability: Windings use high-strength conductors and dedicated clamping structures to withstand short-time neutral current stresses caused by earth faults and system overvoltages.

3. Key Structural Optimizations
- Reinforced insulation structure:High-temperature-resistant and aging-resistant insulation materials are used, with additional insulation margins. The core and coil assembly is firmly clamped to prevent deformation caused by transportation vibration or short-circuit electromagnetic forces.
- Upgraded bushing protection:Bushings with higher creepage distance are selected, such as composite insulated bushings or porcelain bushings with enlarged sheds. This reduces surface flashover risk under dust, sand, and coastal salt mist conditions.
- Robust base and transport fixation:The base frame is reinforced with welded channel steel and provided with standard lifting lugs and transport fixing points to ensure safety during sea freight, inland transport, lifting, and installation.
4. Technical Advantages and IEC Compliance
The solution is designed in accordance with widely accepted international standards to support grid connection and long-term operation in Egypt.
- IEC 60076-1 (General): Covers basic technical requirements, insulation levels, zero-sequence impedance characteristics, and applicable tests for earthing transformers.
- IEC 60076-2 (Temperature rise): Temperature rise design and verification are carried out according to this standard to ensure reliable thermal performance under typical high-temperature operating conditions.
- IEC 60076-5 (Short-circuit withstand capability): Short-circuit current calculation and mechanical strength checks are performed to ensure sufficient dynamic and thermal withstand capability.
- Intelligent monitoring interfaces: Dry contact signals are reserved for oil temperature, oil level, and pressure relief devices. An optional intelligent terminal can support Modbus RTU/TCP, IEC 60870-5-101/104, and other common protocols for integration with existing SCADA systems.
- Testing and certification support: Third-party type test reports and related technical documents can be provided upon project request to support equipment review, acceptance, and grid connection procedures.

5. Economic Benefits
Lower lifecycle cost
The fully sealed tank design reduces routine maintenance activities such as oil filtration, oil replacement, and conservator servicing. For widely distributed distribution networks, this helps reduce inspection and maintenance costs. The design service life can be considered as 30 years or more, supporting lower lifecycle depreciation costs.
Reduced outage losses
When the earthing transformer is combined with a neutral earthing resistor or arc suppression coil, earth fault currents can be limited and arc overvoltages suppressed. This reduces the risk of single-phase earth faults developing into phase-to-phase faults, thereby reducing unplanned outages. For industrial parks, ports, and urban load centers, improved supply continuity delivers significant indirect economic benefits.
6. Project Implementation and Management
- Visible production progress:A dedicated project communication channel is established to provide regular updates on material procurement, coil winding, core-coil assembly, final assembly, and testing. Photos or videos can be shared for key milestones.
- Factory acceptance testing:Factory tests are carried out in accordance with the contract and applicable IEC standards. Third-party inspection witnesses can be arranged if required. Typical checks include insulation tests, ratio tests, DC resistance tests, no-load loss tests, and load loss tests.
- Packaging and logistics:Equipment is protected with moisture-resistant and salt-mist-resistant packaging, with sufficient desiccant inside. Plywood cases without fumigation requirements are used to support import customs clearance and port handling in Egypt.
- Parameter confirmation:The technical configuration presented in this solution is a typical application recommendation. Final parameters shall be subject to the project technical agreement.
7. After-Sales Service and Support
- Remote technical support:Remote assistance is available for installation, commissioning, and fault diagnosis. Video support can be provided when necessary, and on-site engineer services can be arranged depending on project needs.
- Spare parts support:A recommended spare parts list can be provided, including sealing gaskets, pressure relief valve diaphragms, thermometers, and oil level indicators. Consumable parts can be supplied together with the main equipment according to the contract.
- Training and documentation:English operation and maintenance manuals are provided, with Arabic versions available upon request. Online or on-site training can be arranged to help local operation and maintenance personnel understand routine inspection, maintenance, and common fault handling procedures.
