Description

Description

The smoothing reactor is connected in series in high-voltage DC converter stations or installed in the middle of back-to-back DC lines to reduce harmonic currents in DC lines, limit inrush currents when a fault occurs, limit the rise rate of DC reverse-phase currents and improve the stability of the transmission system.

What is the principle of the smoothing effect of the inductor of the series smoothing reactor on the current?

Smoothing Effect of Inductance on Current:

  • Based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, when current flows through the windings of a reactor, it generates a magnetic field around the windings. Changes in this magnetic field induce an electromotive force (EMF), which opposes changes in the current.

  • In a circuit, a smoothing reactor is connected in series between the load and the power source. For fluctuating components of the input current, such as harmonic currents in AC power supplies or pulse currents from power electronic devices, the inductance of the reactor provides a counteracting effect, making the current changes smoother.

Example:

  • In a power system with a large number of nonlinear loads (such as rectifiers, inverters, etc.), the load current can exhibit pulsating or rich harmonic content. A smoothing reactor, through its inductive properties, can slow down the rate of current rise and fall, reducing the peak and trough values of the current. This makes the load current more closely resemble an ideal smooth DC or sinusoidal AC current, thereby reducing the adverse effects of current fluctuations on the system and equipment.
