RW Energy Hangzhou 12 Units 120 kW Integrated DC Fast Charging Station Success Case

RW Energy
Zhejiang Rockwell Energy Technology Co., Ltd.

Closely responding to the upgrading needs of Hangzhou’s urban charging network and focusing on high-frequency charging scenarios in core business districts, this solution deploys 12 sets of 120kW integrated DC fast charging units.

Combining dynamic power allocation and industrial-grade protection technologies, it addresses the challenges of high concurrent usage, harsh outdoor conditions and unattended operation, empowering the construction of a convenient, efficient and intelligent urban charging service network.

1 Overview

1.1 Project Background

As one of China's leading cities in electric vehicle ownership, Hangzhou is continuously advancing its public charging infrastructure to build a "convenient, efficient, and intelligent" urban service network. This project is located in a supporting public parking lot of a core commercial district in Hangzhou, primarily serving private EVs, ride-hailing vehicles, and corporate fleets. These users demand high-power fast charging, superior compatibility, and all-weather operational stability.

The project addressed three core challenges:

  • High-concurrency Pressure: During peak hours, traditional equipment lacks sufficient power, leading to long queues and low operational efficiency.
  • Outdoor Environment Adaptation: Located in open public areas, the station faces extreme summer heat, heavy rain, and damp, foggy winters, requiring high protection ratings and wide-temperature capabilities.
  • Smart O&M Requirements: Open sites require unmanned operation, demanding advanced remote monitoring, fault alerting, and platform integration.

RW Energy provided a 120 kW Integrated DC Fast Charging Solution for this site. By combining high-power output with intelligent power allocation, the project has effectively relieved local charging pressure and established a flagship urban fast-charging demonstration.

2 Core Technology and Functional Advantages

2.1 Technical Performance Highlights

  • Global Compatibility: The hardware platform is compatible with mainstream global standards (GB/T, CCS, CHAdeMO). For this project, dual GB/T connectors were customized for the Hangzhou market. Optimized physical interfaces and communication protocols ensure 100% compatibility with brands such as Tesla, NIO, BMW, and BYD.
  • Dynamic Power Allocation: The 120 kW unit supports intelligent power balancing between dual guns. It automatically adjusts output based on the vehicle’s BMS demand, supporting seamless power splitting within the 0-120 kW range, significantly increasing station utilization.
  • Industrial-grade Protection and Wide-temp Design: The IP54 enclosure, combined with "Triple-proof" (anti-moisture, anti-mold, anti-salt spray) coating, ensures stable operation in Hangzhou’s humid, rainy, and foggy conditions.
  • Seamless Smart O&M Integration: Full support for the OCPP 1.6J protocol allows for seamless connection with the operator's cloud platform, enabling remote monitoring, fault alerting, and automated billing for unmanned stations.

3 Intelligent Control and Safety Testing

Before delivery, all units passed comprehensive Type Tests at the RW Energy Laboratory to ensure 24/7 reliability:

  • Dynamic Allocation Validation: Simulated dual-gun simultaneous charging to verify the 120 kW logic, ensuring stable output without power drops.

  • Protocol Interoperability: Validated 100% BMS handshake success rate with mainstream EV brands, eliminating disconnection or charging failure issues.
  • Safety Protection Verification: Simulated overvoltage, short circuit, and surge impacts to verify millisecond-level protection response.
  • Environmental Adaptation: Simulated high/low temperature cycles and heavy rain to verify IP54 structural integrity and wide-temperature stability.

5 Installation and Operational Summary

The 12 units were successfully installed in the designated core commercial parking lot. RW Energy’s technical team provided specialized guidance on cable path planning, grounding system construction, and waterproof sealing. All units have passed local utility inspections and are officially in operation.

Since commissioning, the system has demonstrated outstanding performance:

  • Peak Capacity: Simultaneously serves 24 vehicles; average charging time reduced by 40%, and daily charging volume increased by over 50%.
  • Environmental Resilience: Zero unplanned downtime despite extreme weather, maintaining an availability rate of over 99.9%.
  • O&M Efficiency: Remote monitoring and automatic alerts have reduced manual inspection frequency by 60%, significantly lowering operational costs.

Industry Background and Pain Points1.1 Industry BackgroundWith more than 30 million EVs on the road, users now expect charging to feel like refuelling. That demand has driven the shift to ultra-fast charging (350 kW+, 800 V platform). But the conventional "transformer + charger" station architecture hits a systematic wall in power density, efficiency and utilisation of the grid connection.1.2 Four Pain Points of Traditional Charging Station
