Nitrogen gas insulation for medium-voltage switchgear — a clean, non-fluorinated alternative to SF6.
Nitrogen insulated switchgear is a medium-voltage metal-enclosed switchgear whose high-voltage compartment is insulated with nitrogen gas instead of sulfur hexafluoride. Nitrogen is a naturally abundant, inert gas with no global warming potential, which makes it an attractive insulation medium where an SF6-free, non-fluorinated solution is required.
Rockwell Energy manufactures nitrogen insulated switchgear for secondary distribution and industrial incomers. The switchgear uses sealed vacuum circuit breakers for current interruption, while nitrogen provides phase-to-earth and phase-to-phase insulation inside the gas-tight compartment. This combination delivers the same IEC 62271 performance class as conventional SF6 switchgear, but with no greenhouse gas in the equipment and no F-gas compliance burden at end of life.
The switchgear is built around a fully sealed, metal-enclosed tank that holds nitrogen at a controlled pressure. Live parts are isolated behind the gas envelope, giving compact dimensions suitable for kiosks, basements and industrial substations. The sealed vacuum breaker handles load, fault and transformer inrush currents, while an integrated pressure and position monitoring function reports the condition of the unit. An optional remote and distribution-automation interface is available for modern network control.
Because nitrogen has no greenhouse gas properties, the switchgear involves no leakage reporting, no fluorinated-gas inventory and no gas-recovery contractor at decommissioning. The steel enclosure and copper busbar are recyclable as standard materials. This makes nitrogen insulated switchgear a practical, low-lifecycle-cost choice for utilities and industrial users committed to decarbonizing their networks.

Nitrogen insulated switchgear is suited to urban and rural distribution networks, industrial plants, commercial buildings and renewable-energy substations where the project specification requires SF6-free, non-fluorinated equipment. It is also a direct replacement option where aging SF6 switchgear is being retired and the network owner wants to remove greenhouse gases from the system.
Nitrogen provides phase-to-earth and phase-to-phase insulation inside a gas-tight sealed compartment, while a sealed vacuum circuit breaker handles current interruption.
Yes. The high-voltage compartment is insulated with nitrogen gas, which is a naturally abundant inert gas with no global warming potential. There is no SF6 or any fluorinated gas in the equipment.
Yes. It is built and type-tested to the same IEC 62271 performance class as conventional SF6 switchgear, with sealed vacuum interruption and gas-tight construction.
Nitrogen has zero global warming potential, so there is no leakage reporting, no fluorinated-gas inventory and no gas-recovery cost at end of life. The steel enclosure and copper busbar are recyclable.
