What is Differential Protection?

Differential Protection Definition

Differential protection is a method used to clear internal faults in the stator winding of a generator or alternator.

Current Transformers

Two sets of current transformers (CTs) are used, one on the line side and one on the neutral side, and their characteristics must match to avoid relay malfunctions.

Stabilizing Resistor

A stabilizing resistor in series with the relay prevents operation due to external faults or CT saturation.

Percentage Biasing

Percentage biasing in differential relays helps manage spill current from mismatched CTs, preventing unwanted relay operation.

Relay Operation

The differential relay operates during internal faults when the operating coil’s torque overcomes the restraint coil’s torque, ensuring reliable protection.

How does the "five-prevention" function of switchgear specifically achieve through mechanical or electrical interlocks?
Prevention of incorrect opening/closing of circuit breakers:Mechanical interlock: The operating handle must be inserted into a specific position and operated in sequence, directly restricting incorrect opening/closing.Electrical interlock: The closing circuit of the circuit breaker is connected in series with the auxiliary contact of the disconnector. Closing is prohibited if the disconnector is not fully closed.Prevention of load-breaking operation of disconnectors:Mechanical interlock: The ope

Types & Characteristics of Surge Arresters
Types & Characteristics of Surge Arresters
IntroductionAtmospheric lightning strikes on overhead lines, bare conductors, or metallic structures in outdoor substations, as well as overvoltages caused by switching operations of equipment and networks (switching overvoltages), pose significant hazards to electrical equipment. To protect equipment and facilitate insulation coordination, surge arresters(also known as "lightning arresters") must be installed at the incoming/outgoing points of overhead lines and in close proximity to transformer

What is the difference between fixed-time overcurrent protection and inverse-time overcurrent protection?
What is the difference between fixed-time overcurrent protection and inverse-time overcurrent protection?
Action time characteristicsFixed-time overcurrent protection: the action time of the protective device is fixed, independent of the size of the fault current. No matter how much the fault current exceeds the setting value, as long as the action conditions are met, a pre-set fixed time will elapse before action is taken to trip or signal is issued. For example, if the set action time is 5 seconds, then when the current exceeds the set value, no matter how much it exceeds, the protection will be t

Fuse Wire Materials
Fuse Wire Materials
Characteristics and Materials of Fuse ElementsThe materials selected for fuse elements must possess a specific set of properties. They need to have a low melting point, ensuring that the fuse will melt quickly when an excessive current flows through it, thereby interrupting the circuit and protecting the electrical system. Additionally, these materials should exhibit low ohmic loss to minimize energy dissipation during normal operation. High electrical conductivity (equivalent to low resistivity
