Indonesia's Smart Recloser System: Integrated Solution for Volcanic Ash and Coastal Salt Corrosion Mitigation

06/09/2025

Project Background
Indonesia is situated within the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiencing frequent natural disasters that pose multiple threats to its power system:

  1. Geographical Risks:
  • Volcanic Ash: The country has 127 active volcanoes. Eruptions produce Volcanic Ash containing sulfides and dust, accelerating corrosion of electrical equipment and causing insulator flashovers.
  • Coastal High Salt Fog & Corrosion: With an 81,000 km coastline, salt fog permeation leads to severe Coastal Salt Corrosion of metal components, shortening equipment lifespan. This aggressive Coastal Salt Corrosion is a primary degradation factor.
  • Geological Hazards: Frequent floods and landslides, accounting for 40% of all disasters in 2023, easily destroy power poles and submerge distribution facilities.
  1. Grid Pain Points:
  • Traditional Recloser Limitations: Insulation performance degrades in environments covered by Volcanic Ash or damp with salt fog, leading to increased false tripping rates. These older Recloser models are highly susceptible.
  • Slow Fault Recovery: Manual inspection on remote islands is inefficient, resulting in average outage durations exceeding 8 hours, especially impacting areas reliant on Recloser protection.

Solution: Multi-Layered Protection Recloser System

  1. Enhanced Equipment Design
  • Material Upgrades:
Recloser enclosure utilizes 316L stainless steel base material + zinc-aluminum-magnesium epoxy coating, offering 3x better resistance against Coastal Salt Corrosion than traditional carbon steel. This new Recloser coating specifically targets Coastal Salt Corrosion.
Insulating components incorporate silicone rubber composite material to resist acidic deposits (pH<4) from Volcanic Ash.

  • Sealing Protection:
Critical junctions in the Recloser employ the Roxtec multi-stage sealing system. Assembled via glass fiber-reinforced composite panels and steel frame bolts, it achieves IP68 protection rating, resisting high-pressure water jets, dust, and Volcanic Ash ingress.
  1. Intelligent Monitoring & Adaptive Control
  • Environmental Sensing Module

  1. Regional Collaborative Protection System
  • Micro-Meteorological Linkage:
Integrated with the Indonesian Meteorological Agency's Volcanic Ash early warning system (e.g., Mount Agung monitoring station), enabling Recloser device sealing procedures to initiate 2 hours in advance of ash fall.
  • Distributed Power Support:
In high-risk disaster areas like Java Island, Reclosers form microgrids with PV/storage. During faults, this advanced Recloser system enables seamless transition to island mode, ensuring continuous power supply to critical loads.

Achieved Results
The deployment of the Multi-Layered Protection Recloser System yielded significant operational improvements, primarily driven by the exceptional performance of the new Reclosers under Indonesia's harsh conditions. Key outcomes and performance highlights include:

  1. Operational Improvements
  • Reduction in False Trips: Substantial decrease due to hardened design and adaptive responses.
  • Minimized Equipment Degradation: Corrosion and environmental damage mitigated.
  • Outage Duration Reduction: Average outage durations in monitored areas reduced by over 50%.
  • Microgrid Coordination Capability: Enables seamless transition to island mode, ensuring continuous power to critical loads during faults.
  1. Intelligent Monitoring System
  • Salt Concentration Sensors: Trigger "High-Humidity Mode" to mitigate coastal salt corrosion.
  • Volcanic Ash Settling Sensors: Initiate self-cleaning current pulses to maintain insulator integrity and prevent flashovers.
  • Integration with National Volcanic Early Warning System: Enables proactive Recloser sealing procedures to prevent ash ingress before volcanic events.
  1. Enhanced Material Design for Corrosion Resistance
  • Outcome: Demonstrated 3x better resistance against coastal salt corrosion, extending equipment lifespan in coastal regions.
  1. Robust Sealing Protection (IP68 Rating)
  • Impact: Eliminates environmental factors that caused false tripping in traditional models.
