Rockwill RVR-1 On-Load Regulator:Fully Sealed Design: What Are Its Advantages?

Rockwill
Field: Manufacturing

Outdoor on-load tap changers are exposed to rain, snow, condensation, high humidity, and dust over their service life. Traditional breather-type designs, limited by insufficient sealing, commonly suffer from insulating oil moisture absorption and oxidation, internal insulation degradation, and shortened maintenance intervals. The Rockwill RVR-1 series on-load tap changer addresses these issues at the source through a fully sealed tank design that isolates internal components from the external environment, combined with no-sustained-arcing tap changer technology.

I. Superior Weather Resistance for Extreme Environments

The fully sealed tank completely isolates external air, moisture, and dust from the internal components, enabling stable operation of the RVR-1 across an ambient temperature range of -40 °C to +40 °C without being affected by high humidity. Outdoor installation requires no additional protective housing.

This design effectively eliminates condensation caused by the diurnal temperature cycle drawing moist air into traditional breather-type tanks, preventing insulation moisture absorption and creepage discharge. The benefits are especially significant in high-altitude, high-rainfall, and coastal salt-fog environments.

II. Long-Term Maintenance-Free Operation, 20-Year Design Life

Complete isolation of the insulating oil from the external atmosphere effectively prevents oxidation, moisture absorption, and particulate contamination caused by air contact. Combined with the no-sustained-arcing tap changer, the switching process produces no arc carbonization products, further slowing the oil aging process.

The equipment eliminates the need for frequent oil draining, filtration, or replacement, substantially reducing routine inspection and maintenance workload. The design life of 20 years complies with IEC 60214-1 for on-load tap changer life assessment.

III. Stable Insulation, Reduced Fault Risk

The sealed structure effectively blocks moisture ingress into the tank, keeping the winding and bushing insulation systems dry and eliminating the root cause of creepage and flashover. Under the insulation test conditions specified in IEC 60214-1, the RVR-1 maintains stable insulation margins, reducing the probability of line tripping and outages.

IV. Pole-Mounted Installation, Reduced Civil Works

Small-capacity models support pole-mounted outdoor installation. The sealed design effectively prevents ingress of rainwater, insects, and debris, eliminating the need for a dedicated protective enclosure or additional housing, and substantially reducing project auxiliary costs.

V. Safe Operation, Controlled Leakage Risk

The fully sealed structure, combined with an automatic pressure relief valve and standard sealing oil valve, effectively controls leakage risk over long-term operation, preventing equipment overheating damage caused by oil loss while minimizing environmental oil contamination.

The sealed enclosure isolates external flames and conductive dust. In the event of an internal fault, the pressure relief device safely vents pressure, eliminating oil ejection and fire hazards, meeting the safety requirements of IEC 60214-1 for oil-immersed tap changers.

Summary

The Rockwill RVR-1 fully sealed design delivers product competitiveness across five dimensions:

  • Weather resistance:Stable operation across full temperature and humidity ranges, suitable for outdoor installation without protective housing
  • Maintenance-free:External contamination eliminated, 20-year design life, significantly reduced maintenance costs
  • Insulation reliability :Moisture and creepage eliminated, adaptable to high-altitude, high-humidity, and other demanding environments
  • Installation flexibility :Pole-mounted without protective housing, reduced project auxiliary costs
  • Safety and leakage control :Automatic pressure relief prevents oil ejection and fire; leakage risk managed throughout the equipment life

This design, combined with no-sustained-arcing tap changer technology, makes the RVR-1 an integrated solution for distribution network cost reduction and efficiency improvement.
