Why are stones laid on the ground in an electric substation?

10/04/2024

The ground of the substation is paved with stone mainly for the following reasons:

  • Fire prevention and safety: The laying of pebbles or small stones under the transformer plays a role in fire prevention. When the transformer overheating or oil injection fire, the oil will flow through the cobblestone layer, into the oil discharge pool, so as to avoid the blockage of the oil ditch, while reducing the fire, conducive to fire suppression 1. In addition, cobblestones prevent small animals from entering the transformer chamber through the drain pipe.

  • Oil seepage monitoring: The cobblestone layer helps to detect leakage in the transformer in time. If the transformer has leaking oil, the oil will drip on the pebbles to form an oil trace, which is easy for inspectors to check and deal with.

  • Heat dissipation and shock absorption: the transformer will produce heat and vibration when it works, and the ground laid with stone can provide a stable support to prevent poor heat dissipation and affect the service life of the transformer due to uneven ground.

  • According to the "3-110KV high-voltage distribution device design Code" (GB50060-92), the oil storage pool in the substation should be laid with a certain thickness of cobblestone layer to ensure the safe operation of the oil-immersed transformer.

  • Aesthetics and economy: The use of pebbles or small stones is not only practical, but also can increase the beauty of the environment, and the cost is lower than other building materials.

To sum up, the substation floor paving stone is for the comprehensive consideration of safety, maintenance and economy.

What is the difference between a dielectric and an insulator?
What is the difference between a dielectric and an insulator?
Dielectrics and insulators are distinguished primarily by their applications. One of the main differences is that a dielectric can store electrical energy by becoming polarized in an electric field, whereas an insulator resists the flow of electrons to prevent current conduction. Other key differences between them are outlined in the comparison chart below.Definition of DielectricA dielectric material is a type of insulator that contains few or no free electrons. When subjected to an electric fi

Transformer Connection Sections
Transformer Connection DesignationsThe transformer connection designation indicates the winding connection method and the phase relationship between the line voltages of the primary and secondary windings. It consists of two parts: letters and a number. The letters on the left denote the connection configurations of the high-voltage and low-voltage windings, while the number on the right is an integer from 0 to 11.This number represents the phase shift of the low-voltage winding's line voltage r

Automatic Reclosing Scheme in Transmission Systems
Automatic Reclosing Scheme for Transmission SystemsThe automatic reclosing system is a series-connected network designed to reduce operating costs and enhance network reliability. Extra-high voltage (EHV) transmission lines are used to transmit large amounts of power, on the order of thousands of megawatts (MW), and therefore should not be interrupted at all costs. Although faults on these overhead lines are common, the power transmitted through them should not be interrupted for long periods du

Difference Between Shunt and Series Voltage Regulator
Difference Between Shunt and Series Voltage Regulator
Linear voltage regulators are mainly classified into shunt voltage regulators and series voltage regulators. The key difference between the two lies in their control element configurations: in a shunt voltage regulator, the control element is connected in parallel with the load, whereas in a series voltage regulator, the control element is connected in series with the load. These two regulator circuits operate on distinct principles, thus each having its own advantages and disadvantages, which w
