What is the Radiator of Transformer?

Radiator in Transformer Definition

A radiator in a transformer is defined as a component that helps cool the transformer by dissipating heat from the transformer oil.

Importance of Cooling

Controlling the temperature of the oil is crucial to extend the transformer’s capacity and prevent overheating.

Working Principle

The radiator increases the surface area to dissipate heat, aiding in efficient cooling of the transformer oil.

Type of radiator

Natural air cooled radiator (ONAN) :

Without the help of any auxiliary fan, it relies only on natural convection for heat dissipation.Suitable for small transformers or load changes little, low ambient temperature occasions.

Forced Air Cooled Radiator (ONAF) :

Use a fan to speed up air flow and improve heat dissipation efficiency.Suitable for medium transformers or applications requiring rapid heat dissipation.

Water cooled Radiator (OFAF) :

Using water as cooling medium, the heat in transformer oil is taken away by water cooling pipeline.Suitable for large transformers or high ambient temperature occasions.

Forced Oil Circulation Air Cooled Radiator (ODAF) :

Combining the features of forced oil circulation and forced air cooling, oil is circulated inside and outside the transformer through the oil pump, while fans are used to accelerate the air flow.Suitable for large capacity transformers or applications requiring efficient cooling.

Operation and Enhancement

Radiators cycle warm oil from the transformer through their fins to cool it down, and this process can be boosted with fans or oil pumps.

Safety measure

Electrical isolation: Ensure electrical isolation between the radiator and the transformer body to avoid the risk of short circuit.

Grounding: The heat sink must be well grounded to prevent a fire caused by static electricity accumulation.

Matters needing attention

When performing maintenance or inspection, follow the safety operation rules to ensure the safety of personnel. For large transformers, automated monitoring and control of the cooling system may also need to be considered.

I. What is a Grid Voltage Overvoltage Fault?Grid voltage overvoltage refers to a phenomenon in power systems or circuits where the voltage exceeds the normal operating range.Generally, under power frequency, if the RMS (Root Mean Square) value of the AC voltage rises to more than 10% above the rated value and lasts for more than 1 minute, it can be determined as a grid voltage overvoltage fault. For example, in China’s common 380V three-phase grid system, if the voltage exceeds 418V and persists
